The Karate
Sarah, from South Wales, started karate a year before she arrived at King’s where she continued to train throughout 6 years of medical school.
She was drawn to the prospect of a physical activity which combines exercise, discipline and self defence and says now she enjoys “the control of kata, the confidence from street-style defence and the social side of the club.”
Sarah has been instructing for more than 7 years, teaching general club sessions at King’s as well as sessions at the Royal Academy of Music and she also taught in a youth development centre in Peckham.
At a competitive level, Sarah won bronze for women’s kumite fighting for the University of London squad and achieved silver in an international weapons competition in the Czech Republic.
Outside of the dojo
Sarah trained as a surgeon, specialising in limb trauma for 5 years. She currently works in Sports Event & Expedition medicine while awaiting a posting with Medicines Sans Frontier.
She also enjoys outdoor activities such as mountain biking and hiking and spent several years volunteering as a lifeboat crew member.
Why King’s
“The karate training from Kings is very varied - fitness & flexibility, discipline, self defence, personal confidence, a martial arts philosophy that will help you with everyday life plus a strong social aspect.
You learn aspects of karate often neglected or forgotten by other clubs. In the 5 years since graduating I haven't found a club anywhere near as good!”
